Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology :
Chair of Photonics and Ultrafast Laser Science

In order to fill a fixed-term position in full-time (39.83 hours/week = 100%) at the earliest possible date, we are looking for a

Research associates (m/f/x)

Our scientific mission is to advance ultrafast laser technology, explore new areas of coherent light generation, and apply our uniquely tailored ultrafast sources to better understand chemical, biological, and physical processes.

As a research associate (m/f/x), you will be responsible for expanding the group's work on fast detection of broadband, single-cycle terahertz (THz) sources. Specifically, utilizing the developed high-repetition-rate dual-comb laser system to implement THz generation via an intracavity approach using a 2-µm laser system. Building on the proof-of-principle work already demonstrated with a 1-µm laser within the group, the research associate will transfer this concept to the 2-µm regime to achieve improved efficiency. Additionally, you will apply the concept of Asynchronous Optical Sampling (ASOPS) using the dual-comb approach to enable fast detection at repetition rates of approximately 100 MHz, with the goal of developing applications in THz imaging.

Scope: full-time
Duration: fixed-term, 31.12.2028 (end of project)
Start: at the earliest possible date
Apply by:
2026-02-23

Your tasks:

  • Development of THz Sources
  • Theoretical Modeling and Simulation
  • Development of fast and sensitive detectors
  • THz Imaging in transmission and reflection

Your profile:

  • Candidates (m/f/x) should hold a PhD in Physics, or Electrical Engineering. The ideal candidate (m/f/x) will have a strong background in ultrafast laser physics and optics, with experience in dual-comb laser systems and mode-locked lasers, preferably in the 2-µm wavelength regime. Knowledge of terahertz (THz) generation and detection techniques is essential, along with familiarity with Asynchronous Optical Sampling (ASOPS) methods. Expertise in intracavity optical techniques and laser cavity design is required, as well as practical experience with high-repetition-rate laser systems in the 100 MHz range. The candidate (m/f/x) should demonstrate an understanding of broadband, single-cycle THz sources and possess the ability to transfer and adapt existing experimental concepts to new wavelength regimes. Strong skills in optical alignment, system characterization, and troubleshooting are necessary. An interest in developing THz imaging applications, combined with an independent and goal-oriented working style, is expected. The candidate (m/f/x) should have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, along with good communication abilities and a collaborative approach to working within a research group.
