The Chair of Theory of Neural Systems of the Faculty of Computer Science is looking for a

PhD position (m,f,x) for 3 years with 29,8725 hours per week (TV-L E13)

The Institut für Neuroinformatik (INI) is a research unit of the Faculty of Informatics of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, see https://www.ini.rub.de/. It is very interdisciplinary, ranging from machine learning to neurophysiology and psychophysics to computational neuroscience. It offers a very vibrant and collaborative environment for both fundamental and applied research.

We are looking for an excellent and highly motivated PhD student to join the Department of Computer Science at the Ruhr University Bochum. The PhD student will be working in the field of efficient machine learning.

Your tasks:

  • The PhD student will work on developing state-of-the-art machine learning models that can scale while being energy-efficient. These models will use sparsity and asynchrony as core design principles to achieve energy efficiency and scalability. Neuroscience/biology can be used as inspiration to inform the development of these models. Collaborations with academic and industry groups to use biology-inspired low-energy neuromorphic hardware will be possible.

Your profile:

  • Candidates for this post should possess:
  • a very good Masters's degree in mathematics, computer science, engineering, or a related field,
  • excellent programming skills (Python preferably),
  • good knowledge of applied mathematics and computer science,
  • ability to learn quickly and work independently, as well as in a team.
  • Preferred qualifications include:
  • interest in interdisciplinary research questions and cooperation,
  • hands-on/research experience with deep learning,
  • experience with machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch/Tensorflow/JAX,
  • good communication and teamwork skills,
  • experience or willingness to collaborate with a wide variety of interdisciplinary partners.

Additional information:

If the position is funded by third-party funds the employee has no teaching obligation.
