The Chair of Applied Solid State Physics of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy is looking for a

PhD student (m,f,x) for DFG project (m,f,x) for 3 years, 29,8725 hours per week, TVL E13

The Chair of Applied Solid State Physics is involved in the research of semiconductors both with regard to fundamental physical phenomena and the development of innovative devices.

The project aims at improving the proton therapy for cancer treatment by developing new detectors which will increase the control on the irradiation dose and make treatments faster and more reliable.

extent: part-time
duration: temporary
beginning: as soon as possible
application deadline:
03.04.2023

Your tasks:

  •  In brief, the general goal can be decomposed in three objectives:

    i) a material science study of GaN interaction with protons,

ii) a technological objective of fabricating a high performance array of GaN detectors connected to Si read-out circuits and multiplexers,

iii) an impact assessment by testing the array in real conditions in terms of both performance and robustness

Your profile:

  • The candidate (m,d,x) should have a Master degree in Physics and should be willing to perform a PhD degree.
  • We expect exceptional motivation and commitment, good communication skills and intention and ability to work independently on an academic level. Good skills of manual sample preparation are absolute necessary. Experiences with vacuum setups, molecular beam epitaxy as well as optical and electronic characterization of semiconductors are beneficial.

Our offerings:

  • Challenging and varied tasks with a high level of personal responsibility
  • A friendly and collegial environment
  • A dynamic environment
  • Employment at one of Germany's largest universities in the University Alliance Ruhr network

Additional information:

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of Germany’s leading research universities, addressing the whole range of academic disciplines. A highly dynamic setting enables researchers and students to work across the traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties. To create knowledge networks within and beyond the university is RUB’s declared aim.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum stands for diversity and equal opportunities. For this reason, we favour a working environment composed of heterogeneous teams, and seek to promote the careers of individuals who are underrepresented in our respective professional areas. The Ruhr-Universität Bochum expressly requests job applications from women. In areas in which they are underrepresented they will be given preference in the case of equivalent qualifications with male candidates. Applications from individuals with disabilities are most welcome.
