The Chair of Theoretical Physics II of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy is looking for a

phd researcher (m,f,x) for 3 years with 26,29 hours per week (TV-L E13)

The unit "FAIR Forschung NRW" within the Institut of Theoretical Physics II invites outstanding candidates to apply for a PhD researcher position for the theoretical research focused on the development of hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-hyperon interactions in the effective field theory framework.

The position will be embedded in the NRW-FAIR excellence network. The PhD project is devoted to the derivation and numerical implementation of the hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-hyperon interactions as well as the corresponding three-body forces using the framework of chiral effective field theory.

extent: part-time
duration: temporary
beginning: as soon as possible
application deadline:
02.01.2023

Your tasks:

  • derive consistently regularized two- and three-body forces using the SU(3) formulation of chiral effective field theory,
  • develop numerical codes for calculating two-body observables and perform determination of the low-energy constants,
  • develop the computational machinery for the determination of low-energy constants from lattice-QCD simulations.

Your profile:

  • a completed M.S. degree in physics with excellent grades,
  • strong background in theoretical nuclear and/or particle physics,
  • a profound interest in effective field theories,
  • interest in computational physics,
  • experience in the development of algorithms (ideally using Python or Fortran),
  • proven analytic skills,
  • keen and willing to work in a competitive international environment,
  • oral and written proficiency in English,
  • motivated to organize and write scientific documents describing the work.

Our offerings:

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of Germany’s leading research universities, addressing the whole range of academic disciplines. A highly dynamic setting enables researchers and students to work across the traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties. To create knowledge networks within and beyond the university is RUB’s declared aim.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum stands for diversity and equal opportunities. For this reason, we favour a working environment composed of heterogeneous teams, and seek to promote the careers of individuals who are underrepresented in our respective professional areas. The Ruhr-Universität Bochum expressly requests job applications from women. In areas in which they are underrepresented they will be given preference in the case of equivalent qualifications with male candidates. Applications from individuals with disabilities are most welcome.
