“Avicenna Live: The Immediate Context of Avicenna’s Intellectual Formation” (ALIVE) is a new research project at the Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies at Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) and is funded by a Starting Grant from the European Research Council (ERC). It seeks to explore a unique set of essential yet hitherto widely neglected source texts for the immediate context of the intellectual development of the Muslim philosopher Avicenna (Ibn Sīnā, d. 428/1037) and to offer a new digital approach to the study of diverse and difficult textual corpora. ALIVE is one of two running ERC projects at the Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies, where a young and eager team engages in high-quality research and fosters an inspiring and collaborative academic environment.
As a postdoctoral research associate (f/m/x) in the ERC-funded project ALIVE, you will be based in Bochum and work under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Andreas Lammer. You will be responsible for one of its four sub-projects and explore Avicenna’s relationship to his own students and the ways in which his engagement with his contemporaries had a bearing on his own intellectual development. In particular, you will study Avicenna’s collection of “Discussions” (al-Mubāḥaṯāt) and write a monograph on their relation to Avicenna’s philosophy as it is expressed in his main works. You will also essentially contribute to the community-based translation of the work by reviewing and revising the drafts of other colleagues alongside translating passages yourself.
