The Chair of multiwaveband astrophysics at the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy is looking for a

PhD (m,f,x), for 3 years, 29.8725 hours per week, TVL E 12/13

The multi-messenger astrophysics group at Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) is looking for a PhD student with the earliest starting date of Feb. 1, 2025. The multi-messenger group at Ruhr-University Bochum (https://people.astro.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/afranck lead by Prof. Anna Franckowiak) is searching for a new group member (m/f/d) at PhD student level. The position is open to candidates from any country. The group provides a stimulating and international environment, with 65% of the group members being international from 7 different countries. The group is involved in multi-wavelength data analysis ranging from optical (ZTF, ASAS-SN, LS4, LAST) to gamma-ray data (VERITAS, Fermi-LAT, CTA). In addition, we are involved in high-energy neutrino astronomy with the IceCube Observatory and in the development of a wide field-of-view survey instrument based on the modular design of Large Array Survey Telescope (LAST). The group closely collaborates with experts at DESY Zeuthen and the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel.

Position description: The successful candidate will work on the development of a wide-field-of-view optical polarization instrument based on the modular design of the large array survey telescope. A prototype polarimeter consisting of four 11 inch telescopes was recently installed at the RUB observing platform. The candidate will perform tests with the prototype at RUB and remote observations at the Weizmann Astronomical Observatory in the Israeli desert. Expected tasks include calibration of the instrument, contribution to the development of the image processing pipeline and analysis of first science data.

Additional subtopics in the context of multi-messenger astronomy may be considered depending on the candidate's profile and interest.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of Germany’s leading research universities, addressing the whole range of academic disciplines. A highly dynamic setting enables researchers and students to work across the traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties. To create knowledge networks within and beyond the university is RUB’s declared aim.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum stands for diversity and equal opportunities. For this reason, we favour a working environment composed of heterogeneous teams, and seek to promote the careers of individuals who are underrepresented in our respective professional areas. The Ruhr-Universität Bochum expressly requests job applications from women. In areas in which they are underrepresented they will be given preference in the case of equivalent qualifications with male candidates. Applications from individuals with disabilities are most welcome.
