Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology :
Chair of Embedded Systems
In order to fill a fixed-term position in full-time (39.83 hours/week) starting January 1st, 2027, we are looking for two
We are an international team engaged in teaching and research on approximate computing, reconfigurable accelerators for machine learning applications, design automation for emerging technologies, reliability, and fault tolerance of (multi-) processor and embedded systems. In particular, we investigate the dynamic reconfiguration of systems for energy efficiency. Within the BMFTR-funded research project EURO-NPU, we are developing the next generation of ultra-efficient edge AI processors. The project aims to rethink rigid AI accelerators by exploring dynamically reconfigurable architectures that flexibly adapt their precision, approximation levels, and early-exit paths to energy budgets and workloads at runtime. In the EURO-NPU consortium (consisting of 11 industry and academic partners), RUB leads the technical and organizational coordination as well as the NPU architecture design. We are offering two PhD positions whose research topics include NPU architecture design, HW/SW co-design, SoC system integration, and physical silicon implementation. You will have the creative autonomy to investigate novel microarchitectural paradigms, approximate arithmetic, and model co-design, while gaining invaluable experience by taking these academic concepts through to a physical ASIC tapeout of a chip prototype in collaboration with consortium partners. Depending on your strengths and interests, you can specialize in specific research directions within the project.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of Germany’s leading research universities, addressing the whole range of academic disciplines. A highly dynamic setting enables researchers and students to work across the traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties. To create knowledge networks within and beyond the university is Ruhr-Universität Bochum’s declared aim.
The Ruhr-Universität Bochum stands for diversity and equal opportunities. For this reason, we favour a working environment composed of heterogeneous teams, and seek to promote the careers of individuals who are underrepresented in our respective professional areas. The Ruhr-Universität Bochum expressly requests job applications from women. In areas in which they are underrepresented they will be given preference in the case of equivalent qualifications with male candidates. Applications from individuals with disabilities are most welcome.
