Postdoc (m/f/d) in Plasma Astroparticle Physics
The Chair of Theoretical Astrophysics IV, in particular Plasma Astroparticle Physics, works at the interface of plasma and particle physics. The Chair of Theoretical Astrophysics IV has a vacancy for a Postdoc (m/f/d). The position is thematically related to plasma-astroparticle physics.
As a research assistant (m/f/d), you will work at the intersection of machine learning and astroparticle physics. In a team of researchers that works with long-term lightcurves of active galaxies, it is the particular goal to build up a simulation-based machine learning system to identify hadronic flares. The candidate will work with long-term lightcurves from the Fermi Satellite and combine them with other lightcurves from radio, optical and X-ray catalogs. It is one of the central tasks in this project to develop supervised and unsupervised machine learning algorithms in order to predict the continuation of the lightcurves and to identify subflares in the long-term multimessenger data.

Your tasks:
- Develop machine learning algorithms for long-term lightcurves of AGN (supervised, unsupervised)
- Predict the continuation of the lightcurves
- Identify short-term structures in the long-term lightcurves
- Help building a bridge between machine learning and astroparticle physics
- Preparation of publications of the research results
- The position comes with a teaching duty of 4 hours a week
Your profile:
- PhD in data science or related disciplines
- Excellent knowledge in the development of machine learning algorithms

The position is salaried and based on the collective agreement of the Länder (TV-L). If the personal and collective agreement requirements are met, the employee will receive pay grade E13 TV-L.

The place of work is Ruhr University Bochum.The load of teaching will be calculated according to § 3 of Lehrverpflichtungsverordnung (state of North Rhine-Westphalia).
