The faculty of Physics and Astronomy at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum invites applications for a

W2 (Tenure Track W3) professorship for experimental physics, spectroscopy of atoms and molecules by laser methods (m/f/d)

to be filled as soon as possible.

Physics research at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum covers a broad range of topics including atomic and molecular physics in the gas phase, at interfaces and especially in plasmas. Existing research collaborations of the faculty in this thematic area include CRC 1316 "Transient Atmospheric Plasmas - From Plasmas to Liquids to Solids" (since 2018) as well as CRC 1491 "Cosmic Interacting Matters - From Source to Signal" (since 2022).

An excellent researcher is sought to strengthen and expand the activities of Bochum's physics in the field of atomic and molecular physics with a focus on laser methods in research and teaching. A possible research focus is the experimental investigation of the excitation of atoms and molecules in non-equilibrium systems such as plasmas. The incumbent is expected to be actively involved in the above-mentioned faculty research collaborations.

Teaching is to be provided in experimental physics as part of the compulsory and elective courses of all programs offered by the faculty, as well as in teaching export. An involvement in the course "Medical Physics" is welcomed.

A positively evaluated junior professorship, habilitation or equivalent scientific achievements as well as proof of special suitability for academic teaching are required, as well as the willingness to participate in academic self-administration.

extent: full-time
beginning: as soon as possible
closing date: 30.06.2023

Furthermore, the following is expected

  • a strong commitment to teaching, enthusiasm and didactic skills in the education of students as well as the willingness to supervise bachelor and master theses;
  • a willingness to engage in interdisciplinary, collaborative scientific work;
  • a willingness to acquire third-party funded research projects.

The position will be filled with a tenure track for the professorship to W3. If the evaluation is positive, the professorship will be appointed to a W3 position in an appropriately sim-plified procedure without a new announcement. The subject-specific evaluation criteria can be viewed at

Applications including a curriculum vitae, list of publications, list of courses taught to date, list of third-party funds raised to date, and ideas about research activities and teaching are requested under the specification ANR. 1911 by 30.06.2023 to the Dean of the faculty of Physics and Astronomy, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, D-44780 Bochum or

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of Germany’s leading research universities, addressing the whole range of academic disciplines. A highly dynamic setting enables researchers and students to work across the traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties. To create knowledge networks within and beyond the university is Ruhr-Universität Bochum’s declared aim.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum stands for diversity and equal opportunities. For this reason, we favour a working environment composed of heterogeneous teams, and seek to promote the careers of individuals who are underrepresented in our respective professional areas. The Ruhr-Universität Bochum expressly requests job applications from women. In areas in which they are underrepresented they will be given preference in the case of equivalent qualifications with male candidates. Applications from individuals with disabilities are most welcome.
