The Chair of Energy Plant Technology at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is looking for a

PhD (m,f,x) for 3 years with 39,83 hours per week, TV-L E13

The Chair of Energy Plant Technology in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Ruhr University Bochum (LEAT) is among the leading research groups in Germany in the field of numerical modelling and simulation of reactive particle systems for process industry or energy conversion systems.

Within a project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the accuracy of numerical simulations on reacting packed beds passed by reacting flows is investigated. In this context, models describing the temporal evolution of the particles and their interaction with other particles, as well as the surrounding gas phase, are needed.

extent: full-time
duration: temporary
beginning: as soon as possible
application deadline:
18.06.2024

Your tasks:

  • Develop and implement physical models within an in-house multi-phase numerical simulation tool.
  • Perform simulations of non-reacting and reacting packed beds.
  • Investigate measures for code optimization.
  • Maintain the simulation tool in coordination with other code developers.

Your profile:

  • The ideal candidate holds a Master in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics or Chemistry and has a sound knowledge in C++ programming, fluid mechanics, numerical methods and gas phase reactions.
  • Proven experience in programming, Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations and/or simulation of reacting/particle-laden flows (especially with OpenFOAM) is an advantage.
  • Proficient knowledge of the English language is necessary. Mastering of, or willingness to learn, the German language is considered a valuable asset.

Our offerings:

  • team-orientated cooperation in a committed, international and appreciative team
  • employment at one of the largest universities in Germany within the University Alliance Ruhr
  • options for flexible working
  • flexible working hours with consideration for Master's study periods

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of Germany’s leading research universities, addressing the whole range of academic disciplines. A highly dynamic setting enables researchers and students to work across the traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties. To create knowledge networks within and beyond the university is RUB’s declared aim.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum stands for diversity and equal opportunities. For this reason, we favour a working environment composed of heterogeneous teams, and seek to promote the careers of individuals who are underrepresented in our respective professional areas. The Ruhr-Universität Bochum expressly requests job applications from women. In areas in which they are underrepresented they will be given preference in the case of equivalent qualifications with male candidates. Applications from individuals with disabilities are most welcome.
