The Chair of Human-Centred Security at the Faculty of Computer Science is looking for a 

Post-doctoral position (m,f,x) for 2 years with 39,83 hours per week, TV-L E14

This is a tandem project in collaboration with Prof. Nils Köbis at UDE, part of the University Alliance Ruhr (UAR) Research Center Trustworthy Data Science https://www.uaruhr.de/researchallianceruhr/trustworthydatascienceandsecurity.html.en

Currently, it is very hard for non-expert users to distinguish legitimate communications and websites from those sent or set up by malicious attackers. Aim of the project is to find reliable trust signals that non-experts can rely on and/or verify. In the course of the project. we will apply and evaluate existing security primitives – such as digital signatures - to create reliable trust signals in for the digital space. This means reviewing existing security primitives and selecting the most promising ones, implementing them on experimental websites and Open Source, and conducting a number of evaluation studies with selected non-expert user populations, We are looking for researcher with a strong technical background IT security background, and previous experience in implementing security in software. Interest in conducting empirical evaluation studies is essential, and there is an opportunity to acquire relevant knowledge and skills for conducting both small lab experiments and large-scale on experimental studies. You will join the interdisciplinary Chair of Human-Centred Security at RUB – part of a large, thriving IT security research ecosystem at RUB – and work with Prof. Sasse in collaboration Prof. Nils Köbis and his team at UDE.

Your tasks:

  •  Reviewing and evaluation available security primitives that mechanisms that could be used to create new, or strengthen existing trust signals on websites and communication tools.
  • Implementation of security mechanisms on websites and Open Source tools.
  • Planning and conducting evaluation studies in collaboration with colleagues at HCS and UDE.
  • If you are interested, you have the opportunity to participate in the supervision of theses.

Your profile:

  • This position requires a completed degree Bachelor or Masters degree in IT Security, or Computer Science (Informatik) with a strong IT Security focus, and a completed PhD degree (or that the PhD thesis has been submitted).
  • Sufficient software design and implementation skills to implement security mechanisms on websites and in Open Source Tools.
  • Ability to work in a large interdisciplinary team at HCS, and with psychologists at UDE.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is essential, fluency in German would be an advantage.
