Faculty of Mechanical Engineering:
Chair of Materials Engineering  Materials Design

In order to fill a fixed-term position in full-time (39,83 hrs/week = 100 %) at the earliest possible date, we are looking for  1

Research associate (f/m/d) for the development of a multiphysics simulation model for high-performance materials (PhD Position)

The Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) is one of Germany’s leading research universities, especially renowned in the field of engineering sciences. Located in the vibrant scientific and cultural hub of the Ruhr metropolitan region, the RUB offers an excellent academic environment with numerous opportunities for collaboration. The Chair of Materials Engineering (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Weber), part of the Institute for Materials, focuses on the study of high-performance metallic materials. Our research emphasizes the relationship between manufacturing processes, microstructure formation, and material properties. With the ongoing digital transformation of materials science, simulation, data-driven models, and AI-based methods are gaining increasing importance. We integrate these approaches with advanced experimental techniques to achieve a comprehensive understanding and targeted optimization of materials. We benefit from a state-of-the-art infrastructure, enabling everything from sample preparation to high-resolution microstructural analysis. In addition to research, we are actively engaged in teaching and industrial knowledge transfer—thus building a bridge between scientific excellence and practical application.

Scope: full-time
Duration: fixed-term, 2 years
Start: at the earliest possible date

2025-07-15

Your tasks:

  • Development of a multiphysics simulation model (heat transfer + microstructure development) in ABAQUS CAE
  • Powder metallurgical production of samples + post-processing
  • Close collaboration with industrial and academic partners
  • Creation of material informatics workflows for material design
  • Efficient translation of results into scientific publications

Your profile:

We are seeking a motivated researcher (f/m/d) with a strong interest in mechanics, simulation, and materials science and engineering. A completed university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in engineering, natural sciences, or materials science is required.

We particularly welcome applicants with:

  • Experience in finite element analysis, preferably using ABAQUS
  • Programming skills in Python® and MATLAB®
  • Interest in multiphysics modeling approaches
  • Ability to work independently and in a team, with a structured and proactive mindset
  • Excellent written and spoken English skills (German is a plus)

We offer:

We offer the opportunity to work in a young, interdisciplinary research group at the interface of materials science, mechanics and simulation. Our aim is to develop innovative methods for the computer-aided design of metallic materials and to implement them in practice.

What you can expect from us:

    • A highly topical field of research with plenty of creative freedom
    • Challenging and varied tasks with a high degree of personal responsibility
    • An open, appreciative and research-oriented working atmosphere
    • Access to state-of-the-art scientific infrastructure
    • Intensive supervision and support for conference visits and international collaborations
    • Employment at one of the largest universities in Germany within the University Alliance Ruhr with the opportunity to pursue a PhD
    • Opportunities for flexible working (mobile working and teleworking)

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of Germany’s leading research universities, addressing the whole range of academic disciplines. A highly dynamic setting enables researchers and students to work across the traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties. To create knowledge networks within and beyond the university is Ruhr-Universität Bochum’s declared aim.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum stands for diversity and equal opportunities. For this reason, we favour a working environment composed of heterogeneous teams, and seek to promote the careers of individuals who are underrepresented in our respective professional areas. The Ruhr-Universität Bochum expressly requests job applications from women. In areas in which they are underrepresented they will be given preference in the case of equivalent qualifications with male candidates. Applications from individuals with disabilities are most welcome.
