The Chair of Experimental Physics I - FFN (Network NRW-FAIR) of the Faculty of Physics and astronomy is looking for as of 01.01.2023 a

PhD Researcher (m/f/d) in Al-based experiment control, for 3 years with 26,2878 hours per week (TV-L E13)

The unit "FAIR Forschung NRW (FFN)" within the Institut für Experimentalphysik 1 - invites outstanding candidates to apply for a PhD researcher position for the development of AI-based experiment control for the operation of hadron-physics experiments at GSI/FAIR (m/f/d).

The position will be embedded in the NRW-FAIR excellence network. The selected candidate will be working at GSI, Darmstadt and taking part in the international PANDA and HADES collaborations. The PhD project will be oriented towards the application of artificial intelligence in experiment control (‘soft sensors’) with the aim to setup a prototype smart sensor system to automate (part of) the operation (calibration, anomaly detection) of the straw-tube tracker of PANDA@HADES. The candidate will take part in the setup, data taking and analysis of the production of hyperons exploiting secondary pion beams impinging a proton target.

Your tasks:

Your profile:

  • a completed M.S. degree in physics with excellent grades
  • a profound interest in machine learning techniques and AI
  • experiences in the development of algorithms using C/C++, or Python
  • proven analytic skills
  • keen and willing to work in a competitive international environment
  • oral and written proficiency in English
  • motivated to organize and write scientific documents describing the work
