The ZWE CERES is looking for a
research associate (m,f,d), full-time, till 31.12.2024 (TVLE13)
CERES is a Central Research Unit of the Ruhr-Universität. It currently brings together six professors and over 30 researchers, which makes it one of the largest centers for the comparative study of religion in Europe. The center hosts a double degree BA program as well as single and a double degree MA-programs for Religious Studies. The programs combine a focus on the material history of religions with theoretical and methodological approaches in the study of religions and are in constant dialogue with our research projects. The long-term project MPCD will create an online and open-access corpus of Zoroastrian Middle Persian texts. The resulting corpus (ca. 54 texts, 687,000 tokens) will be by far the largest of its kind. At MPCD, we will make this corpus accessible in transliteration, transcription, and via manuscript photographs of the 15 oldest codices. The project will provide orthographical, lexical, morphological, syntactical, and semantical annotations for these texts. Furthermore, It will create a digital Middle Persian-English dictionary with about 7000 lemmata. We aim at a semi-automatic lexical and morpho-syntactical annotation based on the Universal Dependencies (UD) standard. The announced job position is related to this specific task. The digital corpus and the ensuing digital dictionary constitute two interlinked analytical instruments. They focus on two closely connected but separate aspects of the texts, syntax and semantics. A web-based working environment enabling the collaborative processing of both corpus and dictionary will serve as a user interface for search and analysis of the prepared resources. Moreover, the project aims to make the corpus of Pahlavi literature accessible for the methods developed in corpus linguistics and digital humanities. The project is funded by the German Research Council for a period of three years. The project and the advertised position are embedded within CERES, a Central Research Unit of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum.

- Developing a semi-automatic process of lexical, morphological and syntactical annotation based on the UD standard
- Coordination with the team at the Cologne University regarding the implementation of the software and data repository
Your profile:
- The requirements are:
- Excellent knowledge of corpus linguistics, data structures and encoding standards
- Experience with algorithms for dependency parsing / morpho-syntactical annotation
- Good command of English or German - In addition, the following qualifications are desirable:
- Experience in digital humanities
- Experience with low-resourced languages
- Philological experience - Knowledge of Middle Persian
