The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum invites applications for the position of a Professor W3 (m/f/d) in Scale-bridging thermodynamic and kinetic simulation commencing as soon as possible.

The holder of the position will represent the subject of

Scale-bridging thermodynamic and kinetic simulation

in research and teaching.

The holder of the position will represent the subject in research and teaching within the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Advanced Materials Simulation (ICAMS). The research profile should focus on one or several of the following subjects

  • Data-driven materials modeling and design
  • Thermodynamic and kinetic simulations
  • Materials processing and microstructure evolution
  • Life cycle simulation and sustainability
  • Mechanical and physical properties

Of particular interest are investigations on the links between atomic bonds, microstructure and the resulting macroscopic material properties. Numerical simulations and artificial intelligence methods on high-performance computers should be used to study materials problems on relevant length scales for material systems and applications.

Applicants must be internationally renowned experts in a relevant field of materials science combined with an excellent expertise in scale-bridging materials modeling. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching in the courses Materialwissenschaft (Bachelor) and Materials Science and Simulation (Master). Teaching can be done in English.

Start: as soon as possible

Requirements

Positive evaluation as a junior professor, habilitation or equivalent academic achievement and evidence of special aptitude are just as much required as the willingness to participate in the self-governing bodies of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum and to generally get involved in university processes according to Ruhr-Universität Bochum’s mission statement. The candidate has to meet the appointment requirements according to section 36 ff. Hochschulgesetz NW.

We expect furthermore:
        • Strong commitment in teaching
        • Readiness to participate in interdisciplinary research
        • Willingness and proven ability to attract significant third-party funded research projects
        • Full integration with the research at ICAMS (www.icams.rub.de) and ZGH (www.zgh.rub.de) and close collaborations with groups in the Materials Research Department (www.mrd.rub.de)
        • Proven track record of collaborative research

        Further information

Complete applications (including a letter of application, a detailed curriculum vitae (with information on honors and awards, invited lectures, current and past third-party funding, teaching and supervision, academic and professional service), a full list of publications, the five most important publications in electronic form with a short description how each publication relates to the position and the planned research, certificates of academic degrees, a two-page teaching concept, and a four-page research plan including envisaged connections with ICAMS, ZGH and the Materials Research Department covering the next five years) should be sent by 2025-05-09 via our online application portal.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of Germany’s leading research universities, addressing the whole range of academic disciplines. A highly dynamic setting enables researchers and students to work across the traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties. To create knowledge networks within and beyond the university is Ruhr-Universität Bochum’s declared aim.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum stands for diversity and equal opportunities. For this reason, we favour a working environment composed of heterogeneous teams, and seek to promote the careers of individuals who are underrepresented in our respective professional areas. The Ruhr-Universität Bochum expressly requests job applications from women. In areas in which they are underrepresented they will be given preference in the case of equivalent qualifications with male candidates. Applications from individuals with disabilities are most welcome.
