PhD candidate (m/f/x) in Cartography

The Cartography Research Group explores how people perceive, understand, memorize and interact with spatial information in an increasingly digital world. We focus on cognitive visualization to design maps and 3D-visualizations of geographic space that align with human perception and decision-making. A second core area is XR-based visualization, developing immersive cartographic experiences in virtual, augmented, and mixed reality. In addition, we investigate the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) for cartographic design features, analysis, and automated map generation.

Your tasks:

  • Development of new cartographic visualizations
  • Collection of research data, (statistical) analysis, and documentation of experimental studies
  • Publishing results in English language publications and presenting at scientific conferences
  • Teaching (3 SWS) in bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in geography, with a focus on cartography
  • Networking activities within the German and international cartographic research community

Your profile:

  • Passion for research and cartography
  • Completed or soon-to-be completed master’s degree in geography, psychology, geoinformatics, or any related field that involves data processing and visualization
  • Significant experience in at least one (and ideally more than one) of the following areas: XR-visualization, programming (e.g. C#, R, python), GeoAI, experimental psychology, statistics
  • High degree of self-motivation and ability to work independently
  • Good command of English

    Further information:

    The position is salaried and based on the collective agreement of the Länder (TV-L). If the personal and collective agreement requirements are met, the employee will receive pay grade E13 TV-L.

    The load of teaching will be calculated according to § 3 of Lehrverpflichtungsverordnung (state of North Rhine-Westphalia).
