The Chair of Thermal Turbomachinery and Aero Engines of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is looking for a 

research associate (m,f,x) for 3 years with 39,83 hours per week (TV-L E13)

The Chair of Thermal Turbomachines and Aeroengines in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Ruhr University Bochum (LSTTF) is among the leading research groups in Germany in the field of experimental and numerical investigation of energy transformation systems. Cutting-edge numerical and experimental research is carried out, covering a broad spectrum of topics from classic turbomachinery aerothermodynamics, aeroelastics, two-phase flows and non-ideal compressible fluid dynamics with a strong focus on the design and optimisation of modern fluid energy machines to be employed in innovative cycles for power generation, energy storage and process engineering and using essentially non-conventional working fluids (such as steam, supercritical as well as transcritical CO2 flow, hydrogen, ammonia, organic fluids and mixtures).

Your tasks:

  • Within upcoming research projects, new concepts of expansion machines for transcritical CO2 as well as hydrogen will be developed in close cooperation with industry and academic research partners
  • The expansion of hydrogen in axial machines instead of simple valves is an attractive way of recovering work - appropriate machines must be devised, however, accounting for a much larger number of stages as it is the case for conventional working fluids (e.g. air, methane)
  • To reduce the production costs, new blade manufacturing technologies are being explored whereby a compromise must be made between blade quality (and hence costs) and global machine performance
  • To this aim, high-fidelity numerical simulations will be employed to predict the effect of various blade surface characteristics on the efficiency of the chair’s own four-stage axial turbine test-rig
  • Results of the numerical simulations, obtained using the in-house CFD-solver SharC will be validated against experiments carried out in a parallel project whilst methods of machine learning and physically informed networks will be employed to derive low-order design models to account for the aerodynamic effects of blade surface quality
  • We look for highly motivated, enthusiastic and highly qualified research assistants, who will carry out the proposed research engaging in numerical investigations with the possibility of obtaining a doctorate

Your profile:

  • MSc/Diploma in the field of Engineering or equivalent (emphasis on numerical/theoretical work)
  • Good acquaintance with the principles and application of Large-Eddy Simulation and other high-fidelity modelling and simulation approaches, with Fluid Mechanics and Turbulence Modelling
  • Proven knowledge (Master-level) of the principles and fundamentals of fluid energy machines (thermodynamics and kinematics as well as fluid mechanics)
  • Very good knowledge (Master-level) with numerical methods for computational fluid mechanics on HPC clusters
  • Mastering of or willingness to learn the German and English languages is desirable
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability of working in an international, highly dynamic and motivated team are an invaluable asset
