Faculty of Geosciences:
Institute of Geosciences  Geomorphology and Geohazards

In order to fill a fixed-term position in part-time (29.87 hours/week = 75%) at the earliest possible date, we are looking for  1

PhD researcher (m/f/x) for 3 years with 29,87 hours/week (75%, TV-L E13)

The 'Geomorphology and Geohazards' working group at the Institute of Geosciences, Ruhr University Bochum, studies the evolution of Earth's surface during the Quaternary. Significant parts of the European Alps are composed of carbonate rocks, yet their landscapes and denudation processes remain largely underexplored, especially across Quaternary timescales. This is largely due to the difficulties in precisely constraining changes in mountain denudation over the recent past, particularly in carbonate landscapes. The “DenudCarb” project aims to address this temporal and spatial gap by utilising electron spin resonance (ESR) signals in carbonate minerals as a novel thermochronometer, seeking to answer key questions about how and when the carbonate topography of the Alps formed in response to climate and tectonic forces.

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join a project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The ideal candidate will work with us on the development and application of ESR thermochronometry of carbonates. We will study selected sites in the European Alps to better constrain the timing and processes involved in valley formation within the carbonate landscapes. The ideal candidate will have a background in Earth Sciences, with some experience in either luminescence or ESR dating, or numerical modelling.
