The German Science Foundation (DFG) is funding the second round of the Research Unit “Diffusion Chronometry of Magmatic Systems” (FOR 2881) to be hosted at the Ruhr-Universitaet Bochum and the Leibniz Universitaet Hannover for 3 more years. The objective is to carry out experimental measurements and develop theoretical modelling tools for diffusion chronometry in various high temperature systems – the focus will be on igneous systems, but most tools will be very much applicable to metamorphic systems and meteorites as well. Your tasks:

  • This subproject is part of an effort to study diffusion in common mineral phases, with a focus on spinel. We are seeking a PhD candidate (i) to quantify Fe-Mg-Cr-Al diffusion coefficients (with distinction of Fe2+ from Fe3+) as a function of fO2 and composition over a range of geologically relevant temperatures; (ii) to detect and quantify the coupling of divalent and trivalent cations during diffusion; and (iii) to characterize the nature of Fe and Mg isotope fractionation produced by diffusion in selected samples. Contemporary geochemical modelling has demonstrated that more information on the diffusion behavior of several cations in spinel is needed and will enhance the status of spinel as a “petrogenetic indicator”. The student will be trained in a novel combination of experimental and analytical techniques to achieve these goals. Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) of thin films on natural single crystals, experiments in one atmosphere gas-mixing furnaces as well as high pressure equipment (hydrothermal bombs, piston cylinders, internally heated pressure vessels) and state-of-the-art analytical techniques like FIB-SEM, RBS, NRAA, TEM, TOF-SIMS, femtosecond LAB-ICP-MS as well as routine tools such as EMPA and FEG-SEM will be used.

Your profile:
The following skills are required:

  • Strong interest in interdisciplinary work and scientific exchange within the Research Unit
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team with international collaborations
  • Excellent time management and communication skills
  • Very good computer and written and oral skills in English
  • Strong background (MSc or equivalent) in Earth science or related disciplines, ideally with a deeper background in petrology and mineralogy
  • An interest in experimental work and quantitative modelling

The following skills are desirable:

  • Experience in experimental petrology
  • Coding experience with Matlab, Fortran, C++, etc.
