PhD candidate (m/f/x): Connectivity of Urban Areas for Wildlife

The Urban Ecology and Biodiversity Group (Prof. Valentin Klaus) at the Institute of Geography researches ecological patterns and processes in urban and rural areas. Our work aims to improve understanding of biodiversity decline and find ways to curb it and promote biodiversity in cities.

In a new project co-funded by Interreg Northwest-Europe, we work on improving habitat connectivity for urban wildlife (small mammals and amphibians) in urban areas.

Scope: part-time
Duration: fixed-term, 3 years or until the end of the project on April 30, 2029, whichever comes first

Your tasks:

  • Proactive participation in a European research project aimed at improving the connectivity of habitats in cities
  • Identifying measures to improve urban habitat connectivity
  • Development of wildlife monitoring in cities
  • Study human-wildlife relationships
  • Plan and conduct a summer school and produce outreach as well as teaching materials
  • Support project members during the implementation of measures and monitoring schemes
  • Publishing results in English language publications and presentations at meetings and conferences

Your profile:

  • Master’s degree in biology, ecology, geography or a similar discipline
  • Strong interest in urban wildlife ecology
  • Strong interest in research and perusing a PhD
  • Knowledge on mammal biology is an advantage
  • Knowledge on habitat connectivity is an advantage
  • Statistical and GIS skills are advantages
  • Very good English proficiency
  • German language skills are advantages
  • Willingness to attend meetings across Europe and to perform field work outside

    The position is salaried and based on the collective agreement of the Länder (TV-L). If the personal and collective agreement requirements are met, the employee will receive pay grade E13 TV-L TV-L.

    If the position is funded by third-party funds the employee has no teaching obligation.
