The Chair at the Department of Philosophy II Philosophy of Information and Communication of the Faculty of Philosophy and Education is looking for a

research associate (m,f,x) limited 3 years (End of project) with 25,8895 hours per week, TVL E13

The research group Philosophy of Information and Communication (Jun.-Prof. Dr. Kristina Liefke) is inviting applications for a PhD position (3 years, 65% TV-L E13) in philosophy of language, experimental philosophy, and/or semantics. The starting date is October 1, 2022 (negotiable). The position is part of the DFG project Episodic Memory Reports: Language-based evidence for experientiality, perspectivity, and generativity (PIs Kristina Liefke & Markus Werning; see https://for2812.rub.de/projects/p10/). The latter is project P10 of the interdisciplinary research group FOR 2812: Constructing Scenarios of the Past: a new framework for episodic memory (https://for2812.rub.de/). The research group provides an ideal research environment that is unique in terms of its interdisciplinary and international character. The professorship Philosophy of Information and Communication is part of the largest and most active philosophy department in Germany. Within the Ruhr-Universität, we are closely connected to researchers from linguistics and cognitive science through the Bochum Language Group and the Research Training Group Situated Cognition.

The project lies at the intersection of the areas
• philosophy of language
• experimental philosophy, and
• semantics.
The application should indicate a research interest in at least one of these areas (or in a related area such as experimental pragmatics, corpus linguistics, or computational linguistics).

Your tasks:

  • The tasks of the successful applicant include working on the project Episodic Memory Reports. This project addresses the question whether speakers use specific linguistic means to report memories of personally experienced events (as opposed to memories of general facts). The content of the project can be designed flexibly, taking into account the interests of the applicant.
  • Main task: writing a dissertation on the topic of language & memory
  • Presentation of research results at national & international conferences
  • Participation in interdisciplinary activities of the research unit
  • (Co-)Organization of conferences & workshops
  • Participation in writing project reports and proposals
  • Participation in academic self-administration
  • Practically all job-related activities can be done in English. German language skills are only required to a very limited extent

Your profile:

  • excellent Master's degree in philosophy, linguistics, or cognitive science
  • excellent command of the English language

If the position is funded by third-party funds the employee has no teaching obligation.
