The Faculty of Mathematics at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum invites applications for the position of a Professor W3 (m/f/d) in Mathematical Statistics and Data Science commencing at the earliest possible date (early succession to Prof. Holger Dette).

The holder of the position will represent the subject of

Mathematical Statistics and Data Science

in research and teaching.

We are seeking an individual with an excellent research profile in modern areas of Mathematical Statistics and the mathematical foundations of Data Science. This includes, for example, areas such as statistical learning, high-dimensional statistics, causal inference, or statistics for spatio-temporal data, but applications from other subfields are also explicitly welcome.

Applicants should be highly qualified both in research and teaching. The internationally visible research profile should meaningfully complement the existing research strengths of the Faculty of Mathematics and foster interdisciplinary collaboration.

Active participation in existing and planned collaborative research projects is expected, particularly within the University Alliance (UA) Ruhr. This specifically includes the TRR 391 "Spatio-temporal Statistics for the Transition of Energy and Transport”.

The professorship’s teaching responsibilities include courses in the faculty’s mathematics degree programs, particularly in the planned Master's program "Mathematical Data Science." In addition, contributions to service teaching for other degree programs are expected (mathematics lectures for students in natural and engineering sciences, particularly in the areas of statistics and data science).

Start: at the earliest possible date
Apply by: 2025-06-30

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of Germany’s leading research universities, addressing the whole range of academic disciplines. A highly dynamic setting enables researchers and students to work across the traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties. To create knowledge networks within and beyond the university is Ruhr-Universität Bochum’s declared aim.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum stands for diversity and equal opportunities. For this reason, we favour a working environment composed of heterogeneous teams, and seek to promote the careers of individuals who are underrepresented in our respective professional areas. The Ruhr-Universität Bochum expressly requests job applications from women. In areas in which they are underrepresented they will be given preference in the case of equivalent qualifications with male candidates. Applications from individuals with disabilities are most welcome.
