The Interdisciplinary Centre for Advanced Materials Simulation (ICAMS) is looking for a

research associate (m,f,x) for 3 years, 29,8725 hours per week, TVL E13

The Interdisciplinary Centre for Advanced Materials Simulation (ICAMS) is a research centre at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, focusing on the development and application of multi-scale simulation tools for advanced materials. The primary goal of the department Atomistic Modelling and Simulation is to understand phenomena occurring on the atomic scale.

Hydrogen is known to deteriorate the mechanical behaviour of most metallic materials. This project seeks to uncover the impact of H on the deformation and fracture in metastable austenitic steels. The theoretical part of the project will be devoted to the development and application of the atomic cluster expansion (ACE) that utilize the machinery of modern machine learning techniques and can reach accuracy close to that of electronic structure methods. Large-scale atomistic simulations will be carried out to investigate complex nanoscale processes at finite temperatures and/or under external stresses related to phase transformations, diffusion, plasticity and fracture that are all crucial for understanding the phenomenon of H embrittlement. The simulation activities will be complemented by experiments carried out at the MPA, University of Stuttgart.

extent: part-time
duration: temporary
beginning: as soon as possible
application deadline:
30.09.2024

Your tasks:

  •  The PhD candidate will develop and implement ACE parametrizations for the Fe-Ni-H system that is able to provide a trustworthy description of this ternary system including its phase and magnetic transformations. This comprises carrying out high-throughput DFT calculations, code development in python, C++ and tensorflow, training of models, and application of the models in large-scale atomistic simulations.

Your profile:

  • The candidate is expected to have a MSc degree in physics, chemistry, materials science or related disciplines with strong interest/background in code development, atomistic simulation and machine learning.

Our offerings:

  • Support from and cooperation with competent colleagues
  • Team-oriented cooperation in a committed, international and appreciative team
  • a friendly and collegial environment
  • a dynamic environment
  • an open working atmosphere

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of Germany’s leading research universities, addressing the whole range of academic disciplines. A highly dynamic setting enables researchers and students to work across the traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties. To create knowledge networks within and beyond the university is RUB’s declared aim.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum stands for diversity and equal opportunities. For this reason, we favour a working environment composed of heterogeneous teams, and seek to promote the careers of individuals who are underrepresented in our respective professional areas. The Ruhr-Universität Bochum expressly requests job applications from women. In areas in which they are underrepresented they will be given preference in the case of equivalent qualifications with male candidates. Applications from individuals with disabilities are most welcome.
