The Chair of System Security at the Faculty of Computer Science is looking for a

Full-time PhD position (m,f,x) in the context of mobile network security ans privacy for 3 years with 39,83 hours per week, TV-L E13

Starting from March 2024, the chair for system security has a new lead (Prof. Dr. Katharina Kohls). Our mission is to improve the security of mobile networks and the privacy of its users.
Mobile networks are an integral part of our lives. We use them on a daily basis to stay connected, but they are also supporting industrial facilities, critical infrastructures, or the communication of first responders. Security flaws in mobile infrastructures have far-reaching consequences: They affect the privacy of millions of end users, lead to significant financial loss in production lines, or hinder the exchange of critical information in emergency situations.

However, mobile networks are highly sophisticated systems that combine wireless radio connections for the access infrastructure and complex software implementations in the backbone network. This high level of complexity increases the chances of specification, implementation, or configuration flaws that have the potential to harm the security numerous of users.

Our research aims for improving the security standard of mobile networks.

You will be joining an excellent team of researchers who focus on different aspects of mobile network security. Our group consists of three PhD students and multiple bachelor and master students that collaborate across their individual projects. We are represented on the top security conferences and closely work together with the Radix Security startup (radix-security.com) that is located in Bochum. Radix focuses on the security assessment of 5G network components and adds an interesting real-world perspective to our daily research routine.
