Young Investigator Group Leader on AI and Security (f,m,x)

As part of the Research Alliance Ruhr, the Research Center Trustworthy Data Science and Security is bringing the expertise of its universities together to bridge the gaps between Psychology & Social Sciences, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, Data Science & Statistical Learning, and Cybersecurity & Privacy. The following position is to be filled: Young Investigator Group Leader (f/m/x) on AI and Security (salary 14 TV-L, 100% FTE).

The leader of the Young Investigator Group on AI and Security (f,m,x) is expected to esablish an independent research group within the Research Center Trustworthy Data Science and Security. The group will be physically located at the Faculty of Computer Science at the Ruhr University Bochum.

Your tasks:

  • Contributing to cutting-edge research at the intersection of adversarial machine learning, AI safety, privacy-preserving methods, secure deployment of AI, use of AI for cybersecurity, or related topics
  • Managing a junior research group, including the entire lifecycle of supervising a PhD position funded for three years
  • Networking with teams and institutions within the Research Center Data Science and Security, including TU Dortmund and University Duisburg-Essen, as well as other relevant institutes, including CASA Cluster of Excellence, Max-Plank Institute for Privacy and Security, and the wider University Alliance Ruhr research ecosystem

Your profile:

The candidate should fulfil the following profile:


  • An excellent PhD degree in AI or related field (up to five years after completing PhD)
  • A minimum of two years of postdoctoral research experience
  • International research track-record
  • Interest and skills in advising students, teaching, and project management
  • Emerging engagement in attracting competitive third-party funding

We offer:

    Besides the funding for the group leader position, the successful candidate (f,m,x) will receive start-up funds for a fulltime PhD student and a budget for travel and equipment.

    Further information:

    The position is salaried and based on the collective agreement of the Länder (TV-L). If the personal and collective agreement requirements are met, the employee will receive pay grade E14 TV-L.

    If the position is funded by third-party funds the employee has no teaching obligation.
