The Chair of Theoretical Physics I of the Faculty of Physics and astronomy is looking for a 

Postdoc (m,f,X) for 2 years with 39,83 hours per week (TVL E13)

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is also a founding member of the Ruhr Astroparticle and Plasma Center, RAPP, that combines efforts in the fields of plasma, particle and astrophysics in the Ruhr Area.
The Institute for Theoretical Physics I at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum is looking for candidates (m/f/d) with an interest in developing new innovative simulation methods for multiscale/multiphysics simulations of collision free plasmas in the kinetic regime with the aim of performing large-scale multiphysics simulations in space physics environments.

Additional information : The position is part of the recently funded Research Unit 5409 "SNuBIC: Structure-Preserving Numerical Methods for Bulk- and Interface Coupling of Heterogeneous Models": https://www.snubic.io Project A2 that brings together expertise from the fields of Numerical Analysis, and Applied Mathematics, Theoretical Plasma Physics, Computational Cardiac Electrophysiology and Thermodynamics of Batteries. You will work in a diverse and international environment provided by the research unit FOR 5409.

Your tasks:

  • Development of multiphysics coupling strategies connecting MHD/Ohm’s law codes with 2-fluid/Maxwell simulations
  • Designing model refinement criteria and physics-based surface coupling strategies
  • Porting to a parallel CUDA environment
  • Performing simulations on High Performance Computers

Your profile: 

The candidate should be familiar with:

  • Very good knowledge on numerical methods for the simulation of collisionless plasmas, ranging from kinetic to fluid simulations
  • Solid knowledge of C++, Fortran, and CUDA programming
  • Experience in High Performance Computing
