The Chair of Chair of Thermal Turbomachines and Aeroengines at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is looking for a

Research Assistant (m,f,x) - Experimental work for 3 years with 39,83 hours per week, TV-L E13

The Chair of Thermal Turbomachines and Aeroengines in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Ruhr University Bochum (LSTTF) is among the leading research groups in Germany in the field of experimental and numerical investigation of energy transformation systems. Cutting-edge numerical and experimental research is carried out, covering a broad spectrum of topics from classic turbomachinery aerothermodynamics, aeroelastics, to two-phase flows and non-ideal compressible fluid dynamics (encompassing media such as steam, supercritical as well as transcritical CO2 flow, hydrogen, ammonia, organic fluids and mixtures) with a strong focus on the design and optimisation of modern fluid energy machines to be employed in innovative cycles for power generation, energy storage and process engineering.

Within a set of exciting new research projects, new design concepts for turbine and compressors to support long-term, high-capacity energy storage as well as for innovative, sustainable aeroengines are developed in close cooperation with industry and academic research partners. The availability of a high-performance, in-house CFD solver and excellent experimental facilities offers the unique opportunity of pursuing cutting-edge research based on high-fidelity measurements and simulations under one roof. We look for highly motivated, enthusiastic and highly qualified research assistants willing to further develop their knowledge and skills in the field of intrusive and non-intrusive measurement techniques for the aero-thermodynamic characterisation of turbomachinery components with the possibility of pursuing a Doctorate or a higher research degree (Habilitation) depending on initial qualifications.

extent: full-time,
duration: temporary
beginning: as soon as possible
application deadline:
15.12.2023

Your tasks:

  •  Particularly, within the still running Projects SchauTeX and DigiTecT the ideal candidate should devise new intrusive measurement configurations by means of 5-hole probes, Kulites and hot-wire anemometry for highly three-dimensional blade designs and support the development of a testrig concept for optical measurements (PIV) in rotating frames of reference.

Your profile:
The ideal candidate should fulfill the following requirements:

  • Have a MSc/Diploma or a PhD in the field of Engineering or Physics with a clear experimental profile;
  • Have a deep knowledge (at least Master level) of fluid energy machines aerodynamics and thermodynamics as well as of turbulence modelling;
  • Familiarity with steady and unsteady intrusive and optical velocity and pressure measurement techniques (HWA, pneumatic multi-hole probes, time-resolved pressure measurements and PIV, BOSS) in a rotating frame of reference;
  • Familiarity with laboratory data acquisition systems and software (such as LabView) and with the appropriate scripting and user coding;
  • Basic knowledge of construction and technical drawing;
  • Fluency in German (at least C1 level, in word and writing – required for an effective communication with the technical workshop team and for teaching in German);
  • Excellent ability to communicate and work in a heterogeneous team.

Our offerings:

  • support from and cooperation with competent colleagues
  • team-oriented cooperation in a committed, international and appreciative team
  • a friendly and collegial environment
  • a workplace in the countryside with direct access to the botanical garden of the Ruhr University Bochum
  • the possibility of working in an international team and to further develop technical, scientific and interpersonal skills through participation to personalised training events

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of Germany’s leading research universities, addressing the whole range of academic disciplines. A highly dynamic setting enables researchers and students to work across the traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties. To create knowledge networks within and beyond the university is RUB’s declared aim.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum stands for diversity and equal opportunities. For this reason, we favour a working environment composed of heterogeneous teams, and seek to promote the careers of individuals who are underrepresented in our respective professional areas. The Ruhr-Universität Bochum expressly requests job applications from women. In areas in which they are underrepresented they will be given preference in the case of equivalent qualifications with male candidates. Applications from individuals with disabilities are most welcome.
